Why the choice matters more in 2026

Solar equipment has largely standardized. Two companies quoting your roof are often proposing similar panels and similar inverters. What actually separates them is the work around the equipment — the load calculation, the roof attachment, the permit, the interconnection paperwork, and whether anyone answers the phone in year seven.

That gap has widened. The residential solar industry has seen significant company churn, and a workmanship warranty is only as good as the company standing behind it. When you compare residential solar installers in Colorado, you are not really buying panels. You are buying a 25-year relationship with whoever screwed them to your roof.

What makes Colorado different

Plenty of national rooftop solar companies sell into Colorado using a playbook written for Arizona or Texas. The conditions here are not the same, and the differences are worth asking about directly:

  • Hail. Colorado sits in one of the most hail-prone corridors in the country. Ask which hail impact rating the proposed panels carry and how the installer handles a hail claim — including whether they document the array condition at commissioning, which makes an insurance claim far easier later.
  • Snow load and pitch. Racking has to be engineered for the local snow load, and panel placement should account for where snow sheds. A layout that ignores this can dump a load onto a walkway or a gutter.
  • Xcel interconnection. Most Front Range homes interconnect with Xcel Energy, which has its own application queue, metering requirements, and permission-to-operate step. An installer who does this weekly moves faster than one learning it on your project.
  • Time of Use rates. Xcel's on-peak window is now 5–9 p.m. on weekdays, year-round — which is exactly when solar production falls off. A good installer raises this before you ask and explains what it means for your payback. See our guide to Xcel's Time of Use billing.
  • Permitting varies by jurisdiction. Denver, Boulder, Jefferson County, Douglas County, and Arapahoe County each run their own process with their own timelines. Ask specifically whether the company has pulled permits in your jurisdiction recently.

Older homes need a different conversation

A lot of Colorado's most desirable housing stock is old — Denver bungalows, Victorians on the near north side, mid-century ranches across the metro. Solar works fine on these homes, but the electrical and structural conversation is different, and a quote that skips it is a quote that will change later.

What a competent installer will look at before quoting an older home:

  • Service capacity. Many older homes still have 100-amp service. Adding solar — and especially adding solar plus an EV charger later — often requires a service upgrade to 200 amps. This should appear in the original quote, not as a change order after contract.
  • The main panel itself. Some vintage panels, including certain Federal Pacific and Zinsco equipment, are widely considered unsafe to add load to and generally need replacement rather than a backfeed breaker.
  • Busbar capacity. The NEC limits how much you can backfeed into an existing panel relative to its busbar rating. If an installer cannot explain how your system fits within that limit — or why a line-side tap is being used instead — that is a real knowledge gap, not a technicality.
  • Roof age and decking. If the roof has less than about ten years of life left, replacing it first is almost always cheaper than paying to remove and reinstall the array later. Older homes may also have skip sheathing or undersized rafters that affect attachment. If the roof is due soon, see detach and reset.
  • Existing wiring. Knob-and-tube or deteriorated cloth-insulated wiring in pre-war homes does not stop a solar project, but it changes scope and should be identified up front.

A useful filter: ask whether the site assessment includes opening the main panel and photographing it. Companies that quote older homes off satellite imagery alone tend to discover the expensive parts after you have signed.

Plan for the EV charger now, even if the car comes later

The most common avoidable expense we see is a homeowner paying for electrical work twice — once for solar, then again eighteen months later for an EV charger that the panel cannot support.

Solar, a battery, and a Level 2 charger all compete for the same finite capacity in your service panel. That capacity is determined by a load calculation, and the time to run it is before the solar design is finalized, not after. Ask any installer you are considering:

  1. Run a load calculation that includes an EV charger, whether or not I am buying one this year.
  2. Tell me whether my existing service supports solar + charger + a future battery, or whether an upgrade is required.
  3. If an upgrade is needed, price it now as part of this project rather than as a later add-on.
  4. If I am not ready for the charger, stub conduit and leave panel space so the future install is a one-day job.

Doing this once costs meaningfully less than doing it twice, and it is the single question that most often separates a thorough proposal from a thin one. We cover the electrical side in more detail on our EV chargers and electrical page.

How to actually verify reputation

Every company says it is one of the reputable solar installers in the state. Review counts are easy to accumulate and easy to game. These checks are harder to fake:

  • Check license status directly. Electrical work in Colorado must be performed under a licensed electrical contractor. You can verify a company's license through the state's licensing lookup rather than taking a logo on a website at face value.
  • Read the recent reviews, not the average. A 4.9 built mostly in 2021 tells you about a company that no longer exists in the same form. Sort by newest and read the last six months — especially any review that mentions service after installation.
  • Ask for addresses, not testimonials. Request two or three recent installs in your city or county. A local company can produce them quickly.
  • Confirm they pull permits under their own license. Permit records are public. A company that subcontracts everything and pulls nothing is a sales organization with a crew attached.
  • Separate the warranties. Panel and inverter warranties come from the manufacturer and survive the installer. The workmanship and roof-penetration warranty comes from the installer and does not. Ask who honors it if they close, and get the answer in writing.
  • Look beyond the company's own site. Third-party marketplaces and review platforms, along with the Better Business Bureau, give you a view the company does not control.

If you are quoting a small business

Small business solar systems are not just larger residential systems, and the crew that is excellent on a Littleton bungalow may not be the right fit for a warehouse in Commerce City. Commercial projects differ in ways that matter:

  • Roof type. Flat TPO, EPDM, or membrane roofs typically use ballasted or mechanically attached racking — a different discipline from pitched composition shingle, with different warranty implications from the roof manufacturer.
  • Electrical service. Three-phase service and larger switchgear require different design work and often a different interconnection path than a home.
  • Demand charges. Commercial bills often include a demand component that solar alone may barely reduce. Whether storage makes sense is a genuinely different calculation than it is for a house.
  • Tax treatment. Business systems have depreciation and incentive mechanics that residential systems do not, and they are worth reviewing with your accountant rather than relying on a salesperson's summary.

The takeaway

Get more than one quote. We will say that plainly even though you are reading it on an installer's website — comparing two or three proposals is how you learn what your roof actually needs, and a company confident in its work has no reason to discourage it.

When you compare, hold the proposals against the same criteria rather than the headline price: Is the load calculation done? Is the roof assessed? Is the service upgrade priced? Does the payback math acknowledge the 5–9 p.m. window? Is the company licensed, local, and pulling its own permits? The cheapest quote and the most complete quote are rarely the same document, and the difference usually surfaces during installation rather than during the sales call.
